The National Gallery of Modern Art (Rome)
Rome’s National Gallery of Modern Art, located near Valle Giulia, is one of the best art museums in Italy. Works by Paul Cezanne, Rodin, Antonio Canova, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh are among those you can see there.
The Gallery was created in 1883 to house the newly unified Italian state’s contemporary works of art. It was originally located in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni until 1915. The collections were then moved to the Palace of Fine Arts, where works of contemporary and modern Italian art are still on display to this day.
It hosts 20,000 works – paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations – and offers a great view on art starting from the 1800’s to today. This is the only national museum in Italy entirely dedicated to modern and contemporary art.
The National Gallery is supported through the special autonomy granted by the Reform of MiBACT (Ministero per i Beni e le attività culturali e per il turismo); it is a place of research and experimentation where one can think about languages, exhibition experiences and the role of contemporary museums.
It's many highlights include works from from the neoclassical period to the abstract works from the 1960s.
The Galleria Nazionale has a vast collection of art on display in its impressive rooms as well as a constantly changing offer of exhibitions and thought provoking presentations. The Educational Services are part of a long tradition of services that the museum has developed over the decades and supports research and experimentation in close contact with the University of Rome. No visit to Rome is complete without time spent visiting this impressive National institution!
